Filming will commence at the Chongqing location

UPDATED 06/05/06 Monkey Peaches: "According to Chongqing Morning Post, filming of Zhang Yimou's Curse of the Golden Flower, previously known as The City of Golden Armor, will begin at the set of an imperial post later this month. The set is built at the bottom of a naturally formed funnel called "Heavenly Pit" in Wulong County, near the southwestern Chinese city of Chongqing. The post is designed in the architectural style of China's Tang Dynasty. In the center of the courtyard, there is a steel pole attached with dozens of steel cables connected to the cliffs surrounding the post. Purpose of the steel pole and steel cable is unknown. The newspaper reports that the production company has signed an agreement with the local authority about how to protect the natural environment." According to Sina the new filming area is busy getting ready to house and feed the movie company. Back at the Hengdian Studios props and all things needed at the new shooting area have been packed-up and are being moved there. They will probably begin the actual filming after the 14th.

05/30/06 The other night Chow Yun-Fat and Gong Li had a dramatic scene together and parts of the set has been opened to the public. By June 10 the filming will continue of COTGF at the skyhole area in Chongqing. The stars in addition to 200 to 400 others will transfer to that location. Information about the location:
The Chongqing Wu-Long Sky Hole the location for the filming of The City of Golden Armor: The scenic spot of sky hole and crevice in the rock is about 70km to Fengjie county, Chongqing, covering an area of 456 square kilometers, with six scenic spots, including the largest sky hole in the world, the longest crevice in the skylight gorges, world-class underground river-the dragon bridge river and also the maze river. It’s really a place with world wonders, a good place for having a tour, having a holiday, or science investigation explorations.

The battle rages for filming of COTGF

From what Chow Yun-Fat said at The Da Vinci Code premiere in Beijing he must be taking his break from filming about now, and doing some more work sharpening his skills speaking mandarin. He and Jay Chou have been reported to be staying at the luxury International Conference Center Hengdian Hotel in the VIP section with their body guards present. Filming of late seems to be mostly of battle scenes with one side being clothed in armor of gold and the other army in silver. Meanwhile the "war" of words between Hengdian and the movie's representative goes on about the treatment of the tourist who expected to see more of the filming, and especially some of the main stars (which up to now they have not). Reporters are also frustrated at the lack of interviews. Some pictures of Gong Li with a mystery boyfriend (picture), and continual reports of Jay Chou's love-life questioning whether or not he has broken-up with his girlfriend, and over who, seems to be the only news.

While Zhang Yimou is still shooting scenes for Curse of the Golden Flower with Chow Yun-Fat and other members of the cast, at the Cannes Film Festival a small sample of the film has been taken to the festival for viewing by buyers:

Hengdian World Studios the new Hollywood of the East

For $5, visitors — a la Universal Studios — can walk around some sets such as an ancient town with raging floodwaters. Hengdian now boasts 13 movie lots — the largest film base in Asia — including a full-size replica of Beijing's Forbidden City, plus numerous shops and restaurants catering to the country's budding film industry. Many newcomers here are hoping to replicate the success of "Hero," the action-packed hit that was shot here and went to the top of North American box office charts. The rise of Hengdian, a five-hour drive south from Shanghai, reflects China's emergence as both an important location and market for movies. Some Chinese films have proved to have powerful commercial appeal in Asia and the West, thanks in part to new interest in China because of its economic and political ascent. The success of "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon," which grossed $213 million worldwide, is often cited as an example of the money-making potential of Chinese movies. Such talk is spawning dreams of stardom here, enough probably to cause some Communist Party cadres to wonder: How ya gonna keep 'em down on the farm, after they've seen Paree? Wen's village, called Hengshan, is among several in Hengdian known as extra villages, because so many residents have quit plowing the land to take bit parts. Zhang Yimou yesterday had a scene in Chekiang of the three leads, Chow Yun Fat, Gong Li and Jay Chou together. The whole country's press came to visit the set but because Zhang wanted it to be secret, he closed the venue for shooting. Even though the press was left outside the door, many tourists were angry because they came to see the sights and bought admission tickets. They demanded a refund at one point. The day earlier, Zhang had a scene of normal greetings and over a few thousand ladies of the court and eunuchs were required to kneel and bow 7 times within five minutes. To ensure that they were all synchronized while bowing to Chow Yun Fat, they shot the scene many times and everyone was sweating.

Zhang Yimou for the first time is now working with the thousands of soldiers. Even though they are more than the hundreds of students they have been working with on the film, the soldiers are more disciplined. The logistics of feeding, housing, etc. is a large task for the makers of the film, but Zhang with his bull-horn shouts the orders until he is satisfied with the multitude. However, getting them to all kneel at the same time was a chore for the director. Financing Curse of the Golden Flower to set a standard

UPDATE May 14 According to Screen Daily, Bill (William) Kong, one of the producers of The City of Golden Armor, now marketed under the new English title Curse of the Golden Flower, just signed a financing deal with Standard Chartered Bank in Hong Kong, one of the biggest local banks, listed on both the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong and the London Stock Exchange. This is not the first a Zhang Yimou movie receiving financing from a foreign bank. Kong told Screen Daily that in the past he had helped acquiring credit for Zhang's Hero and House of Flying Daggers from US and European banks, such as French-based Natexis Banques Populaires. Kong said this was "a significant milestone for Hong Kong, China and the whole of Asia entertainment industry" and "an Asian filmmaker, local bank financing provides an alternate mean to funding movies that have historically been financed by private investors only." In recent years, the Chinese film industry has produced many multi-million dollar projects and none of them are financed by domestic banks, which are generally incompetent of handling risk. Filming begins for actors at the Hengdian World Studios amid the "golden flowers."

UPDATE May 12 It seems the weather will not bless the filming as the third day they were filming at night with beautiful gold and green lanterns lighting the palace grounds, but later the rain began again. Actor and singer Nicholas Tse was looking for Chow Yun-Fat, but because of the conditions of the filming he only stayed a few minutes. Just long enough to get observers all excited that he was there. UPDATE May 10 "The full-scale replica of major structures of Beijing's Forbidden City has been modified to look like a palace from a different time. A giant courtyard has been filled with about 250000 fake chrysanthemum flowers. Chow Yun-Fat and Gong Li, who are playing the emperor and the empress, have shown up yesterday to rehearse the scene of some ceremony. The same courtyard will also host a battle scene between soldiers of two princes, played by Liu Ye and Jay Chow." Chow Yun-Fat and Gong Li arrive at Hengdian on Monday

admiringgongli.com reported that didaily.com says that Monday CYF, his wife, and Gong Li arrived in Hengdian. Heavy rain has been a determining factor in scheduling the filming. Equipment for the battle scenes are being brought in from Hong Kong. Most of the scenes will be filmed at night because the tourists will be at the studio during the day.

Does The City of Golden Armor have another new name?

UPDATE May 8 admiringgongli.com "The shoot ended on May 4. The last sequences did not involve Li or Yun-Fat and they have reportedly had a short break. The production team has begun the move to the Hengdian TV and Movie Studios where filming commences in the next few days. While the costumes and props are being moved to Hengdian, the main Beijing sets are being demolished. The Hengdian shoot is scheduled to end June 10 to make room for another production. Since Hengdian complex is a tourist attraction, the production team is considering moving some of the sets constructed there rather than destroying all of them. The final outdoor sequences are sceduled to be shot in Chongqing beginning in mid-June."

According to Movie Web: "Also at the Cannes market, Focus Features International will be selling the epic Curse of the Golden Flower, formerly known as the untitled new Zhang Yimou film, starring Chow Yun-Fat and Gong Li..." The Cannes Film Festival will take place from May 17 - 28, 2006. The sea of artificial golden chrysanthemums made for the filming no doubt are the flowers that inspired the new title of Autumn Remembrance aka The City of Golden Armor aka Curse of the Golden Flower.

Several articles in Chinese seem to say the last scene filmed in Beijing was on May 4, and the actors and director have left for the filming at the Hengdian World Studios which will begin May 8 to June 10. Chow Yun-Fat did not seem to be spotted by the press leaving Beijing, and Zhang was going to see about some other activity before going to Hengdian.

Problems selling Asian films in America

Steven Spielberg, Oliver Stone and representatives of eight US film distributors have been invited to the set of The City of Golden Armor at Beijing Film Studios. Photos and videos of Zhang Yimou meeting with Spielberg and Stone have been distributed to the media. According to Shanghai newspaper Jiefang Daily, Zhang Yimou's partner producer Zhang Weiping said they were trying to make a sale to the Americans. Since Ang Lee's Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, action movies set in the ancient China have become quite popular. Zhang Yimou quickly made Hero and House of Flying Daggers, to bank on such trend. Then came Chen Kaige's The Promise. The movie was exhibited at a lavish party last May in Cannes and the Weinstein brothers picked up the distribution rights after they watched an 11 minute promo reel. In December, while concluded the movie was not strong enough to desire a full nationwide release in North America, which was insisted by Chen Kaige, the brothers returned their purchase to Chen. The movie was later picked up by Warnor Independent Picture, which has arranged a limited release of it in North America. The incident has suddenly made the sales of other Chinese period actioners somewhat difficult and Zhang Yimou has to try a lot harder to sell his new movie to an American distributor for a good price. Earlier a good friend of Jay Chou Liu, Geng Hong Will, was visiting him at the set of City of Gold Amour and Jay helped put in a good word for his friend for possiblity of being added to the cast. Zhang Yimou said he would consider if there is any.On that day, Jay and Chow had a scene together and before that Jay had an action scene and Jay's friend felt sorry for him with all the hard words as Jay has not done much of such work before but Jay said it was fun.Jay mispronounced Anthony Wong's name at the HK Film Awards and Chow said, "I am your emperor father, don't you mispronunce my name." Geng Hong Will said he asked Jay about his costume and Jay complained about how heavy it was for him to wear. The scenes that were being shot were mainly Jay and CYF's scenes, and especially with an action scene involving Jay, therefore he cannot reveal too much. This is no easy task for Jay the scene took a couple of takes before completion. There is a great amount of secrecy on the set, and cameras are not allowed to take pictures. In the article it was revealed that on the 17th this month, “The City of Golden Armour” will conduct its last round of press conference in its duration of filming, with the focus this time around on Liu Ye, Chen Jin and certain actors and actresses yet to be announced. Zhao Benshan visits the set of "Armor"

The star of Happy Times a Zhang Yimou comedy movie from 2001 was a guest on the set of "Armor." Because he is such a funny guy like Chow Yun-Fat they were reported to have made a fast friendship between them. CYF enjoyed the experience so much of Benshan that he suggested they make a picture together with Zhang. He (Zhang) was non-commital on the subject. What a movie set that would be with two such zany personalities together!! It is sometimes difficult to think of CYF as zany, but let's face it, he likes to be funny and enjoy himself. It was also reported that Zhang ZiYi visited the set and expressed to Zhang that she wanted to be in another of his movies. 4/2/2006) Phoenix Satellite celebrated its 10th anniversary two nights ago and presented the Ten Year Achievement Phoenix Awards.
